Picture it. Brand-new Nissan Z. A blistering 420 horsepower. Nine-speed auto to get in gear, fast. Track mode for a real adrenalized thrill. You're ready to ride. Hop in, turn the key -- nothing. Engine doesn't turn.

What gives? Lights and displays on the dash are lit. Maybe you can start sometimes, but only because you're in certain gears or drive modes. Then, the trouble gets a little easier to figure out. As with sports cars, so with everyday sedans and SUVs, what you've got -- it's most likely a bad starter. Jump-starting not working, either, or you find the starter smoking or covered in oil, then it's pretty certain.

Why? Because, call them self-starters, starter motors, or cranking motors, that dedicated starter motor and starter relay that makes one up -- it's the only thing that cranks or starts the engine. So, it's not only how a vehicle starts but also how it stays running. (Remote starters just do this without a key turn -- you just press a button on a smart key fob.)

Don't worry. Starter failure has easily identifiable causes. The simplest is damaged parts. The others are terminal corrosion and loose wires. You can figure out what the problem is exactly by running an inspection. Turns out you need to replace it, it's a fairly straightforward job. Here's how to do it, generally. Just be sure to check your owner's documentation for specifics. And, of course, if you're not sure exactly what to do, an authorized Nissan service center will be glad to help.
