Oil Filters: Removing Contaminants from Your Nissan's Engine Oil

Modern Nissan of Winston Salem - where quality meets affordability for all your vehicle's requirements. Oil filters capture harmful contaminants from engine lubricant before they damage precision internal components. These cylindrical assemblies contain filtering media trapping particles while maintaining adequate oil flow for lubrication. Your Frontier or Kicks relies on effective filtration protecting bearings, camshafts, pistons, and other precision parts from abrasive wear caused by contaminated lubricant circulating through the system.

Filter Design and Function

Pleated paper or synthetic media inside filters captures metal fragments, dirt particles, and combustion byproducts as oil circulates continuously. Anti-drainback valves prevent lubricant draining from the engine when stopped, ensuring immediate oil pressure at cold startup. Bypass valves allow unfiltered oil flow if media becomes completely clogged, preventing catastrophic oil starvation damage. Proper filtration extends engine service life substantially by removing harmful contaminants consistently.

Filter Performance Decline

Filtering media becomes saturated with trapped contaminants over service intervals, progressively reducing capacity and flow. Temperature extremes degrade adhesives bonding filter element layers together. Extended oil change intervals overload filters beyond their designed capacity limits. Low-quality filters use inferior media capturing fewer and larger particles only. Gasket deterioration causes external oil leaks.

Filter Replacement Schedules

Follow manufacturer-recommended service intervals for proper replacement timing. Severe driving conditions including short trips, towing, or dusty environments require more frequent changes. Engine noise or low oil pressure warnings may indicate clogged filters restricting flow. Genuine Nissan oil filters feature correct media quality, proper bypass valve pressure settings, and reliable gasket seals that aftermarket filters frequently lack.
