Oil Filters 101: Everything You Need to Know

Motor oil may lubricate engine parts, but it's got a few impurities to begin with, and it captures even more contaminants as it lubricates. So, over time, muck can build up in it, and if that's not bad enough, it can also turn to sludge if your radiator isn't working right. The Parts of One and What Each Does

Every oil filter contains a housing, a medium, and a gasket. The medium captures the above-mentioned pollutants before they can cause engine problems. The oil filter housing does two things: it holds the filter, and it attaches it to the engine. The oil filter gasket both closes the filter off from the outside and helps prevent oil leaks.

When to Replace Them

Consistently, during every oil change or every other one, every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first.

The Signs it May Be Time for a Change

They include:

• Oil pressure loss
• An engine oil warning lighting up on the dash
• General engine performance problems

You should replace the housing gaskets if they get brittle and start to crack, as that can lead to an oil leak.

Where to Access Them

One place is underneath the engine compartment (once you remove any applicable undertray). Otherwise, you can get to them from above the bay itself. Either way, consult your owner's manual for more info on this.

When you go to put in a new one, though, avoid the aftermarket and buy the genuine article.
