Two Basic Mods That'll Boost the Performance of Your Nissan 240SX Big-Time

An icon of the late 1980s and 1990s, your 240SX is a sports car that nobody mistook for anything else than a Nissan. Because it was such a blast to drive, it has since become a popular drift car, a favorite of modders everywhere. If you aspire to the same, you'll just have to do a little customizing to get there.

Here are two great places to start.

1. Engine

The first-generation 240SX had a spirited 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine. It was naturally aspirated, though; it could only pull in so much air. So, it never got far past power and torque ratings of 140 horsepower and 152 pound-feet, respectively.

You can still get a little bump in both. Just install a turbocharger (or better, a supercharger), swap out the stock air intake for a cold air intake, and add a performance air filter in place of your factory engine filter. Together, they'll give the engine a richer mix of air and fuel by letting it use more air in the ratio. The result: better combustion -- more power.

2. Suspension

The earlier 240SX featured the right suspension for sport driving: a MacPherson strut front and a rear multilink. Plus, the car was a pretty lightweight 2,700 pounds or so. The second generation, however -- the base model, specifically -- had a softer suspension, plus no rear sway bar.

You can improve on one and add the other: swap out any factory springs for lowering springs, and put in that sway bar -- that way, you'll get the ground clearance and more precise handling you need. If you're not sure how to go about this, don't worry; a Nissan service center will be happy to help.
