All About Nissan Brake Pads
Brake pads are the textured surfaces on top of the brake calipers in your Nissan vehicle's disc brake system. They help the calipers generate the friction needed to slow your wheels and stop your tires by contacting and rubbing against the brake rotors. There are four kinds, generally.
One is organic. These are for everyday driving. They're dependable, relatively easy on rotors, they don't produce much brake dust, and they're fairly inexpensive.
Another is ceramic. These offer enhanced durability. They're made for diverse weather, quieter, and their dust isn't as sticky on wheels.
Yet another is metallic/semi-metallic. These resist heat and fade. They also offer a firmer feel than other kinds of pads.
The last is carbon fiber. These are superior at high temperatures, offering a combination of high resiliency and the best possible stopping power.
No brake pad lasts forever, though. When you should replace them depends on how you drive and where you do it most often. Usually, though, you're supposed to take care of it every 40,000 to 50,000 miles.
However, if yours are going bad, there are signs that'll tell you. Listen, for instance, for your brakes whining or for grinding noises (which usually indicate warped or damaged rotors). Also, feel for them vibrating. You may also notice it's starting to take longer to slow down and stop. Finally, look for warning lights on the dash and inspect the pads for wear and damage.
Experience any of these, and you should follow any inspection results that call for pad replacement. Before you buy new ones, though, be sure they're the genuine. Nissan manufactures them compatible with the model you drive, after all, and that's guaranteed. You may not get such assurances from aftermarket brake pads.
