The Nissan LEAF is a compact car -- more specifically, an all-electric vehicle (EV) -- that debuted in 2011 and is still for sale today. Initially, the model incorporated an AC synchronous electric motor paired with both a 24-kilowatt-hour, lithium-ion-manganese-graphite battery pack and a single-speed transmission. Together, they produced 107 horsepower driven by 206.5 pound-feet of torque.
Features in 2011 ranged from real-time navigation and Intelligent Key push-button ignition to a solar panel on the rear spoiler, plus automatic headlights. There was also a Cold Package available for both the car's SV and SL trims that included heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, among other perks.
For 2022, the model comes in base and Plus variants and S, SV, and SL trims, depending on which you bought. The power ratings of the available AC synchronous electric motors and lithium-ion battery packs are 110- and 160-kilowatts and 40- and 62-kWh, respectively. The power output that results: 147 to 214 horsepower and 236 to 250 pound-feet of torque, depending on model and trim. Front-wheel drive (FWD) remains standard. Features, however, range widely. You can get everything from steel or alloy wheels and a quick charge port to an 8-inch touchscreen, fog lights and LED headlights, a cargo cover, and driver aids galore. There's even a Technology package for the SV trim with ProPilot Assist.
