All About Nissan Exhaust Systems
What they do is help remove the toxic byproducts created when engines combust air and fuel. If your Nissan didn't have one, its fumes would sicken you and your passengers. They would also pollute the environment, not to mention violate both emissions standards and some laws.
First, they pass through a catalytic converter. There, metals like platinum, rhodium, and palladium contain them, splitting them into nitrogen and oxygen. The former is held back, while the latter flows onward. The process also burns up carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.
Meanwhile, a muffler and resonator help make sure air flows as freely as it can. They reduce operational noise, too. An exhaust manifold then shunts the cleaner gases (mostly carbon dioxide and water vapor) down an exhaust pipe. They enter the muffler's tail pipe, flow out, and dissipate into the air.
Unfortunately, exhaust systems can go bad over time, owing to use and age, but there are symptoms that'll tell you that's happening. Two of the most obvious are warning lights on the dashboard (e.g., Check Engine) and worsening gas mileage. You may also hear unusual noises coming out of the muffler and/or exhaust pipe, and smell what seems like rotten eggs. If you suspect your exhaust is the problem, do an inspection and review results; swap out whatever those results recommend. Otherwise, replace the resonator and/or muffler every 2 to 4 years. Also, change the catalytic converter every 100,000 miles.
When it's time to buy parts, make sure they're genuine. What Nissan makes for its models will come compatible with yours right from the factory, after all, and that's a fitment guarantee that you may not get on the aftermarket for exhausts.
