Splash guards are barriers on a Nissan vehicle's front and rear wheel wells. You usually find them on the brand's cars. The variants on its SUVs and pickup trucks, on the other hand, are often called mud guards or mud flaps.

What they do is straightforward: they help protect the underbody, including the rocker panels and fenders. If your ride didn't have them, corrosion would set in a lot more quickly, and your paint job would get scuffed more often. Plus, crud buildup on the wheels would start to make it harder for your tires to spin.

There's more to them, too. For one, they’re designed either universal (fitting many Nissan models) or custom-fit (made for a specific one). Secondly, they're made of everything you can imagine, from rubber to more impact-resistant thermoplastic polymers, even ruggeder metals such as chrome or stainless steel. Third, their finishes can vary, textured to smooth, and they're available in several different colors, with some even showing off logos to boot.

Best of all, though, they're easy to both install and clean up. All you have to do is screw them into your vehicle's existing mounting holes, most of the time; little to no drilling is necessary. They spray down with soap and water either at the local car wash or in your driveway.

Unfortunately, though, no splash guard lasts forever. They can crack or tear -- that is, if they don’t otherwise break during an accident. They can even just plain wear out from age. In any such case, you should replace them -- all of them at once, too. That'll help maintain both their quality consistency and your ride's looks.
