The Nissan Xterra, a compact SUV produced by Nissan between 1999 and 2015, was intended for off-road enthusiasts and people looking for a rugged vehicle. The first generation, which debuted in 1999, was based on the Nissan Frontier pickup truck platform and had a boxy appearance, high ground clearance, and prominent fender flares. The Xterra was equipped with a 3.3-liter V6 engine. In 2002, the Xterra was upgraded to a more powerful 3.5-liter V6. The second generation was completely redesigned while retaining its rugged appeal. It continued with the 4.0-liter V6 engine and was available with a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The second generation model also has a refined interior with improved materials and features, including a more user-friendly layout, an available navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, and an upgraded audio system.
The Xterra kept its off-road capabilities, with a stronger frame, off-road-tuned suspension, and features such as hill descent control and a locking rear differential. The Xterra PRO-4X trim level had off-road features like off-road tires, skid plates, and Bilstein shocks. The Xterra was discontinued in 2015 as market preferences shifted toward more fuel-efficient crossovers and SUVs. Despite being no longer in production, the vehicle is still a popular choice among off-road enthusiasts and is frequently sought after in the secondhand vehicle market.
