All About Nissan Brake Rotors
Brake rotors are the discs attached via ribs to the wheel hubs on your Nissan vehicle -- critical parts of its brake system. What they do is fasten to the brake calipers, using the brake pads on top of the calipers to generate friction. This resistance, your vehicle uses to slow down and stop. The rotors also help rid the brakes of excess heat.
There are four types, generally. The first is blank & smooth (i.e., smooth), which many cars use. The second is slotted, which many SUVs use. The third is drilled (i.e., cross-drilled), which many trucks and sports cars use. The last is drilled & slotted, which some high-performance vehicles use.
Smooth brake rotors are the cost-effective, everyday kind. They're easier on brake pads than others, plus corrosion- and crack-resistant. Slotted brake rotors, however, are designed for improved airflow; they channel away dust and debris better. Cross-drilled brake rotors are ideal for use on the track and when towing, as they're highly reliable when wet, and they help scatter heat better. Drilled & slotted brake rotors offer a combination of many of the best features of both slotted and drilled rotors.
Unfortunately, no brake rotor is permanent. You'll need to replace yours about every 70,000 miles, or when they show signs that they're starting to fail and go bad. Listen for strange noises and feel for wobbling when you brake. You can also inspect the rotors to see whether their surfaces are damaged. Change any parts you determine to be problematic, if not the rotors themselves. Be sure to replace them in pairs, however; it'll keep your Nissan braking properly.
When it's time to buy new, be sure you get genuine. Your brand designs them compatible with the model you drive, after all, and that's a fit-and-finish guarantee that aftermarket brake rotors may not always provide.
