Floor Mats 101: Everything You Need to Know
What They Do
Two things: protect the floor plastics and upholstery in your Nissan vehicle from the damaging effects of liquids, dirt, and debris, and help make it easier to clean up those messes. (Some cargo accessories, like floor liners, do the same thing.) The benefits: less time spent maintaining your interior and less money spent on it.
What They're Made of
Some, made of fabric or carpet, for instance, are for everyday use, offering basic protection in milder climates with temperate weather. Others, made of vinyl or rubber, are designed to better stand up to some of the worst conditions -- spring mud, winter snow and ice, you name it.
The Difference Between Carpet and Rubber or Vinyl
Carpeted floor mats are more absorbent, soaking up dirt and water, whereas vinyl and rubberized floor mats are impervious to both, repelling muck. The latter sometimes get called "all-weather" because they're designed this way.
Features They Can Have
Raised edges, bevels, or spikes, if not grooves or caps. These help simplify cleaning. Others include retainers, nibs, or clips, if not anti-slip backing, which help prevent them crumpling.
When to Replace Them
If they start to tear or bunch up. Rips only get worse, and when they do, any car mat -- say, the one on your driver's side, for instance -- can get stuck, under your brake or throttle pedal in this case. That'll quickly put you and your passengers in danger.
So, when it's time for a change, be sure to order the genuine article.
Why Buy Genuine OEM Floor Mats
Nissan designs them for its models specifically, ensuring they'll fit yours -- the aftermarket for floor mats can't always make that claim.
