Install a No-Drill (Adhesive) Spoiler: 6 Easy Steps for Nissan

Want to get your Nissan vehicle the attention it deserves? Maybe improve its aerodynamics a little, by decreasing air resistance (drag)? We'll bet you'd even appreciate a slight fuel economy bump. You can get all three putting on the right spoiler.

An everyday car or SUV like Nissan Altima or Nissan Rogue. A truck like Nissan Frontier. A sports car like the latest Nissan Z. On the trunk, the roof, the bed or tailgate, or even the hood. Whatever model you drive, and wherever you want to install, it's a pretty easy job, and one that won't take too long. Plus, as a do-it-yourselfer, you'll save money not paying a Nissan dealer. Here's how to do it, using trunk mounting as an example. (Steps can vary; check your owner's documentation for specifics.)

  • Gather what you'll need. That's paint prep, like isopropyl alcohol, plus some cleaning cloths, a tape measure, masking tape, and silicone-based sealing caulk. Also, you don't want to do this in the cold -- temps in the 70s Fahrenheit are ideal.
  • Clean the trunk lid. Wash it with soap and water, dry it, and use the alcohol or paint prep to get rid of any remaining residue on the lid -- grease, wax, or otherwise.
  • Put any manufacturer's tape on the spoiler. Any tape that comes with the spoiler from Nissan, not the masking tape. Manufacturer directions should tell you whether you need to do that, and if so, how. Important: leave the layer protecting the sticky part on. You may have to put silicone adhesive on now, too; again, check OEM instructions on that.
  • Put the spoiler where it's going to go on the trunk. Use the tape measure; make sure both sides of the spoiler are even, and use the masking tape as a guide for where it'll go (but don't tape it down; this is only to remind you where the spoiler is going).
  • Peel back the tape on the spoiler. Pull about an inch of each piece of tape away. Put the spoiler back on the trunk, where you used the masking tape as a guide. Pull away the rest of the tape, but don't move the spoiler.
  • Last steps. Once all the tape's off, put pressure on the spoiler, firm and even, making sure it's flush against the trunk. Take off the masking tape guides. Let the adhesive set for 12 hours or so. In the meantime, no washing, waxing, or driving.
  • Note: if your spoiler has a brake light, you might need to run its wiring; for that, you'll have to drill a hole. Double-check Nissan instructions on what to do. Of course, if you're not sure how to go about this, an authorized Nissan service center can certainly help.
