Genuine Nissan Frontier Sliding Bed Extenders
A bed extender solves the problem every mid size truck owner runs into eventually: the load is a foot longer than the bed. Fold the extender out over the open tailgate and the bed grows by that foot, with a frame holding the cargo in instead of a ratchet strap and hope. Turn it around and it does the opposite job, closing off the front of the bed so groceries and tool bags stay against the cab instead of sliding to the tailgate on the first turn.
The Genuine Nissan Unit
The Frontier extender, part T99T7-9BU1A in black, is fully adjustable and mounts to the bed rails the truck already has. Nissan describes it as getting the most out of your bed with maximum versatility and minimum effort, and the useful part of that is the adjustability: it is not a fixed frame, so it adapts to the load rather than the load adapting to it.
Check Your Build Date
This is the detail that trips people up on this part. The catalog splits the Frontier extender by production date, with a separate version for trucks produced after September 1, 2011. The bed rail mounting changed, so the two are not interchangeable even within model years that look identical. Before ordering, check the build date on the door jamb sticker, not just the model year on the title.
What It Does Not Replace
An extender holds cargo in, it does not cover it. If what you are hauling needs to stay dry or out of sight, that is a tonneau cover, and the two are often used together. It also does not add payload capacity: the bed is longer, the truck's rating is not.
Installation and Ordering
Installation is bolt-on to the existing rails, with no drilling on a factory bed. Add your vehicle or enter your VIN before ordering so the catalog shows the version that matches your build, and if you are ordering during a project, order it with the bed hardware you need rather than after.
Loading With the Extender Out
Two things are worth knowing the first time you use it. With the extender folded over the open tailgate, the load is resting partly on the tailgate itself, so the tailgate cables are carrying weight they do not carry when it is closed. Keep heavy items forward against the cab and let the extender hold the light, long end. And the extender frames the load, it does not tie it down, so long cargo still needs a strap at the back. Finally, check the fit of the extender against anything else mounted in the bed. A bed liner, a toolbox at the bulkhead or a set of bed rail caps can all reduce the clearance the extender needs to swing, and that is easier to sort out before the part arrives than after.
