Nissan Air Filter Care in 5 Easy Steps

Check Engine light coming on in your Nissan vehicle? Maybe your engine's misfiring and losing power, or you're having trouble speeding up. Maybe it's worse than that: black smoke's coming out of the exhaust.

Don't worry. Most of the time, it's not a bad fuel injector, or even a faulty ignition coil. It's just a case of clogged or worn-out air filters. Do an inspection to figure things out. Find them clogged, discolored, or damaged, and they've more than likely gone bad.

We'll tell you how to take the best possible care of both your engine and cabin air filters, so next time, they last as long as possible, and so you can avoid engine, heater, and AC problems in the long run.

1. Gather What You'll Need

  • Protective gloves and goggles (or a face mask)
  • A screwdriver and wrench
  • A work surface
  • A trash can or trash bag
  • A vacuum
  • A spray air filter cleaner, or a combo of water, laundry detergent/dish soap, and a spray bottle
  • A soft-bristle brush
  • A source of running water (e.g., a garden hose or faucet)
  • Specialty oil (for oil-coated air filters only)
  • 2. Take Out the Old Air Filters

Whether on a car like Nissan Altima, an SUV like Nissan Rogue, or otherwise, you'll find the engine air filter on the top or side of the engine. The cabin air filter should be right behind the glove compartment. Consult your owner's manual for specifics on location; it can vary by model.

To take out the engine filter, pop your hood, find the top of the engine filter's housing, remove it, and then remove the filter. To take out the cabin filter, open the glove compartment, find the pin and screw that hold it up, remove them, lower the compartment, pull off the cabin filter cover, and take the filter out. Use the screwdriver and/or wrench if needed.

    3. Clean the Filters

Shake as much dust, dirt, and debris as you can out of the filters, over the trash can or bag. Vacuum any detritus that remains. Then, spray the air filters with the cleaner and let it sit a couple minutes. Scrub the filters gently but firmly with the brush (you can also use an old toothbrush to get into any crevices). Then, rinse off the cleaning solution completely with your running water source. (To avoid damaging the filters, use low pressure.)

    4. Dry the Filters

Dump any excess water out of the filters and set them aside to drip-dry. Note: if you have oil-coated filters, apply a layer of specialty oil evenly and let the filters absorb it for a few minutes.

    5. Replace the Filters

Put the housings and filters back in and use your hand tools to reassemble everything. If you're unsure of how to go about any of this, you can always get the job done at a Nissan dealer.
